Open Question: The gay can of worms?

30 July 2010, 10:07 pm

So, here's the thing. I believe I can end the argument about gay marriage. When I got married, my wife and I chose to have a non-religious ceremony. It wasn't officiated by a religious figure, done in a church and no mention of god was made during the ceremony. We're not anti-god, we're just not holy enough to be hypocrites. Now, Our marriage is 50 state legal because it's a man and a woman. This is because when we got married, the officiator said "By the powers 'vested in me by the state of Nevada I now pronounce you husband and wife." Wait... did you read that? He said the power came from the "State of Nevada"!!! Yup, Actually GOD has nothing to do with marriage. God doesn't have to bless a union to make it a marriage. God originally had nothing to do with marriage. It was intended and used for centuries as a way to unite families wealth. So, the big stink about gay marriage is that the bible says it's wrong. Hey, ok I haven't read it myself BUT since religion doesn't have to bless a marriage to make it official then why are gay people not allowed to marry again? What sense does that make? Now, aside from blind ignorance, what am I missing that says gays shouldn't be allowed to marry? ratluvr - I apologize if I made i seem that I thought homosexuality is a sin, I don't believe it. As a matter of argument, the church is an establishment and in being it has the right to change (or not change) it's rules. I think the fight for religious gay marriage is far less justifiable than a non-religious ceremony. Sorry Anna - maybe that sentence was a bit confusing. My wife and I did not marry in a church. (and saying god doesn't bless our marriage is pointless to a person that doesn't believe he has to)... Read More »
